What's for dinner in your house this week?Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7906740277083467701.post-40844444165774025082011-02-17T10:24:00.001-06:002011-02-17T10:25:36.061-06:00THIS is why we Stockpile! My husband and I have been working on our stockpile for a few months now, and we have a healthy supply of cereal, poptarts, oatmeal, boxed potatoes, soup and other canned goods, TP, paper towels, personal care items, and pain relievers. Our intention all along was to buy when things are cheap and stockpile so that we don't ever have to pay full price for these items. Plans changed!

We started looking for a house last month, and we finally found one that we like. We put a cash offer in on this foreclosed home, and we are currently waiting on a response from the bank to see if it's been accepted. In the meantime, our cash offer, if accepted will completely drain our bank accounts. We're talking DRAIN. We made the biggest offer possible, hoping that it will be reasonable for the bank to accept, even though it is still signifigantly below the list price. We shall see!

The downside of paying cash is that we will be BROKE if this offer is accepted. The upside is that we will own our own house free and clear and not have a mortgage payment to worry about. Since there will be no mortgage or rent to pay, it shouldn't take long for us to rebuild our savings and be able to fix up the house a bit. But what if something happens in the meantime? What if the car breaks down? Yikes. Pretty scary stuff! In the long run, it will definitely be beneficial to our family's financial well being to live mortgage-free....but what about in the meantime?

So, right now we wait for news on our offer. We jump a bit every time the phone rings, and we eat out of our stockpile, saving every penny possible for the closing costs that we might have to be paying very soon. We eat cereal, poptarts, boxed potatoes and soup, and we're loving every minute of it!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7906740277083467701.post-66747292240041752742011-02-14T16:27:00.000-06:002011-02-14T16:27:16.115-06:00Vote for the Princess!I entered my baby in a contest to win a new all-custom hand made cloth diaper from Doodle Dypes. Please click the link below and "like" Elena's picture to vote for us. While cloth diapering is great for a frugal family, these custom made diapers are not! They are a luxury, and diapers like the one Elena is wearing in this picture run around $25-$30 each. We splurge for super-cute diapers every once in awhile, but winning a free one is even better! Even with a diaper stash of all handmade custom diapers it will still be much cheaper than buying disposables for 2 years!

Doodle Dypes is the only place that we buy custom diapers for Elena. She has great customer service, super cute prints to choose from, and they work wonderfully! Many of the "boutique" diapers are cute as a button, but leak everywhere. Doodle Dypes has the best of both worlds!

There are tons of great coupons up right now, but the best is a coupon for a free loaf of Meijer brand bread. Can't beat free!

M-Perks are digital coupons that you can use by logging into the M-Perks website, "clipping" the coupons you're interested in, and then using them at the checkout line. Your M-Perks account is tied to your cell phone number. You log into the website with your cell phone number, and then you enter your cell phone number at the checkout touchpad to apply your coupons to the order. Viola! Instant paper-less coupons! Can't beat that! :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7906740277083467701.post-3074624679182018352011-02-07T07:03:00.000-06:002011-02-07T07:03:14.370-06:00Snowfall and Sickness...My apologies for hot having many posts the past few days. We were hit by the "big one" (snowstorm that is) and we were busy stocking up, cleaning up, and staying warm! We were also hit by another "big one", but this one seemed to be some sort of viral illness. I was sick Wednesday-Thursday, the baby wasn't feeling well Thursday-Friday, Alex was sick Saturday, Nolan was sick Saturday-Sunday and Jason got sick Sunday and is still sick in bed right now.

We didn't stick to our menu plan very well because of everyone being queasy, so no menu plan this monday. We need to clean out the fridge of leftovers and it will pretty much be a free for all with everyone eating whatever doesn't make them feel sick!

Hopefully we'll be over this soon and things will be back to normal!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7906740277083467701.post-64839055873463789642011-02-01T11:36:00.000-06:002011-02-01T11:36:35.542-06:00Blogs of NoteI read a huge number of blogs each day and I like to hand pick a few posts to share with you all that I find interesting. Since hubby was working I was on my own. Well, on my own adult-wise. In the car was my 7 year old, 5 year old, and 3 year old sons, 1 year old daughter and the dog that we're puppy-sitting for awhile. We weren't able to leave until my oldest got home from school at 4:00 PM, so we figured we'd shave some time off the trip and eat in the car, so that we'd get to Grandma's at a decent time. Boy was that a mistake.

I treated the kids to McDonalds where each of the boys ordered a happy meal with milk shake- a special treat for them! Imagine my horror when I hear from the backseat "Mom, I'm gonna throw up!". My 5 year old was sick, and I was driving 70 mph down the Interstate with no exit in site. "Use the happy meal bag!" I yell. And boy, did he use it. We're lucky that sucker didn't bust open. My guess is that the combination of the greasy food with the milk shake and moving car did him in.

I stopped at the next exit at a semi-scary gas station and drag all 4 kids into the ladies room to get everybody cleaned up, tend to the ill one, and make everybody go potty. After about 20 minutes in the restroom we finally go to get back in the car and my daughter's happy meal (first ever!) was gone. The dog had eaten it. I cursed the dog under my breath, gave the hungry girl a graham cracker, buckled everyone in and hit the road again.

Fast forward about an hour, again traveling down the Interestate at 70 mph when I hear a horrible sound. The dog is in the passenger side seat, right next to me barfing up an entire happy meal. Great. Another stop, another clean up, and a now very grumpy mommy.

We eventually did make it, after adding over an hour to our regular trip time and using up every bit of patience in my being. We've made this trip about once a month for several years now. You'd think that by now, it'd be no big deal. But no, everything is a big deal when you have four kids! :)

Hope everyone had a better weekend than I did! I got home to be greeted by over 800 posts in my google reader to scan over. Maybe I'll find some good deals to post for you tomorrow while we're preparing for the big snow storm!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7906740277083467701.post-23581985698612267182011-01-30T22:58:00.000-06:002011-01-30T22:58:53.278-06:00Menu Plan Monday

It's that time of the week again! And I had all of the materials on hand for some frugal fun! :)
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7906740277083467701.post-30278585131867595202011-01-26T22:49:00.000-06:002011-01-26T22:49:49.963-06:00Thrifty Thursday - Valentines Day Decorations! It's that time of year again. The cold weather has kept the kids in the house for MONTHS now, and they're starting to get really restless. Soooo, today's Thrifty Thursday topic will help keep those kiddos busy for a bit!

Today we'll be working on coffee filter hearts to hang on the windows to cheer up the dreary weather and get ready for Valentine's Day!

Materials Needed:
Coffee Filters
Markers
Scissors
Spritzing water bottle
Tape

This project is super easy for kids of all ages to participate in. We will have a 5 year old, 3 year old and 2 year old doing this project at my house today, and I think they'll all do great!

First, take your coffee filters and let the kids color them with the markers. Squiggles, shapes and anything colorful will be great!

Once all of the filters have been colored with the markers, take the water bottle and spray the filters. The colors will bleed, creating a watercolor, or stained glass type of effect.

Next, the coffee filters need to dry well. Let them dry during lunch and nap time, or use a hair dryer on a cool, low setting to speed up the process.

Once the filters are dry, fold the filters in half and then cut out a heart shape with the scissors. For fancy hearts use scrapbooking edging scissors with scallops or zig zags. To fancy them up even more you can fold the hearts and then cut smaller hearts from the inside of the heart.

Once you have them all cut out they are ready to be hung on the walls or on the windows with tape to spruce up the house for Valentine's Day. The sun will shine through the colors and look very pretty! Great way to bring some cheerfulness to your home during the cold, gray winter days!

Pictures of our completed projects to come later!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7906740277083467701.post-50824351469025437292011-01-26T15:47:00.000-06:002011-01-26T15:47:39.742-06:00Friendly Wednesday!

I'm not real big on buying seasonal items on Clearance because I don't like to deal with storing it until the appropriate season comes up, but I did pick up a few things.

I found some Disney Christmas Cards (6 pack) for 25 cents each. They will be super cute for next year. The ones I picked up were mainly Toy Story 3, but they also had Disney Princesses, Tinkerbell, and Winnie the Pooh.

I also picked up some silver and gold beaded garlands for a quarter that I thought might come in handy throughout the year for one of our impromptu family parties that we throw on smaller holidays and other special days when we feel like having some frugal fun at home!

Also, I'm happy to report that my receipt had a coupon for 50 cents off any one participating Fresh Start Every Day product. I did not notice while I was in the store which items are marked as Fresh Start Every Day, but now I'll be headed back to check it out! Dollar General has a Fresh Start Sweeps that features the logos for Ragu, Lysol, Huggies, Suave, Kleenex, Scott, Snuggle and Sun, and the coupon states "Registered Trademark of Kimberly-Clark Worldwide", so I'm thinking the Fresh Start Items are most likely paper products, household products, and personal care type items. This coupon should work as a store coupon since it does not say Manufacturer Coupon. You should be able to stack this reciept coupon with a manufacturer coupon to score a great deal on one of these participating items.

Good Luck and let us know if you find a great deal at Dollar General!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7906740277083467701.post-51606455956111903592011-01-25T14:41:00.000-06:002011-01-25T14:41:21.644-06:00Happy Birthday Elena!Today my baby girl turns one year old. Where did the year go? I swear it has been the fastest year of my life! I love all of my kids dearly, but I've clung to Elena's first year for dear life. She is my first girl, and my last baby. All year long I've been thinking about the "lasts" that we'll be experiencing. When will be the last time that I rock her to sleep? The last time I nurse her? The last time she snuggles up on my chest and sucks her little thumb? Watching a baby grow up is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Happy Birthday Elena, and I hope this first year has been as joyous and lovely for you as it has been for me! I love you!
To celebrate my princess's birthday we're having a small dinner at the house this evening, and then a party with my side of the family at my mom's this coming weekend. This evening we'll be having spaghetti with homemade sauce, garlic bread, salad, and grape salad. And of course, birthday cake!

Luckily we stocked up on grapes that were on sale at Meijer this week for 99 cents per pound, so I was able to make the grape salad featured by Courtney on the Women Living Well Blog last week. It looks delicous! Can't wait to try it!

I made the cake myself and frosted it with homemade Bakery Shop Icing. I hate getting up early, but relish the time to prepare for the day and just enjoy the quiet house. Some mornings are spent folding laundry, while others are spent watching the news, catching up on my Google Reader, or checking facebook. The quiet is just so... quiet. And nice!

Grab a cup of coffee, relax for a few minutes, and prepare for the busy day ahead of you. Oh, and don't forget to visit Plum District this morning to snag a $10 gift card for Papa Murphy's for only $5.00! I'm sure they will go fast!
The budget is $5, and there is a maximum of three transactions. I've been reading these challenges for a couple of weeks, so I thought I'd jump on in and see what I could come up with!

Pedicare Cold Medicine $5.99
Big Roll Toilet Paper 0.39

= $0.27 Out of Pocket & Get $2.50 Register Reward

Total Value = $10.26 (These are the Sale Prices!)
Total Out of Pocket = $5.26
Register Rewards Remaining = $2.50

The last $2.50 RR can be used on a third transaction to make your $5.00 stretch even farther, but I chose to keep mine for next week! Good Luck! A $20 gift card cost only $10, for one day only. To top it off, if three of your friends buy gift cards through your referal link, yours is free! I promptly bought one for myself, and then my husband also bought one through my referral link. (There was a limit of one offer per customer). I posted my referral link on facebook and two of my wonderful facebook friends also bought gift cards, which then made mine FREE!

So, I then had $40 worth of Amazon gift cards that I only paid $10 for. I knew just what I needed to buy: Pull-Ups!

By joining Amazon Mom I was eligible to get 15% off all diapers, and free shipping. By purchasing my items as a subscribe and save subscriptions (where you automatically get shipped the item after 1 month, or 2 months, etc.) I saved an additional 15%. Note: You can cancel subscriptions at any time!

So, with my $40 credit I purchased an 88 count box of size 4 Easy Ups at $30.18, which ended up being $21.13 after the applicable discounts.

I then purchased a 40 count box of UnderJams at $22.99, which ended up being $16.09 after the applicable discounts from Amazon Mom and Subscribe and Save.

So, with my $10 that I spent on the gift cards I was able to buy $53.17 worth of training pants, score free shipping, and still have almost $3.00 of credit remaining on my Amazon Account. AMAZING.

There are a number of ways to score free Amazon gift cards, including using Swagbucks, doing surveys, and doing product reviews for various websites. Keep your eyes open and keep reading. I'll be featuring some of these topics in the near future!
